A stutterer is a very offensive teaser. And how to overcome this defect of speech?

On the International Day of Stuttering People, which is celebrated on October 22, aif.ru told about the causes of stuttering and how to cure it. speech therapist at the National Medical Research Center for Children’s Health of the Ministry of Health of Russia Karolina Surkova.

“About 1 person out of 100 stutters. These are world statistics. In Russia, there are about 100 thousand people with stuttering caused by damage to the central nervous system. Moreover, stuttering is more common in boys and men than in girls and women.

Stuttering is a violation of the tempo of speech, due to the convulsive state of the muscles of the speech apparatus. Common causes of stuttering in children include:

  • psychological trauma (the child was very frightened or was under stress for a long time);
  • bilingualism or multilingualism in the family (the tempo-rhythmic coloring of speech in different languages is different, switching from one language to another, the child sometimes begins to stutter);
  • too fast speech of parents;
  • the presence of a stuttering adult in the family (the child may begin to imitate him).

It is important to distinguish true stuttering, when the muscles spasm, from pseudo-stuttering, when the child has abnormal speech breathing. Parents may suspect a predisposition to stuttering in a child if he speaks with hesitation, swallows air with his mouth when he recites a poem.

If the child began to stutter, it is necessary to contact a neurologist and a speech therapist. The neurologist will exclude or confirm the organic nature of stuttering, if necessary, prescribe drug therapy to relax the muscles of the articulatory apparatus. The speech therapist will determine the corrective route, work on the setting of breathing.

It is very useful for parents to learn poems with children, read fairy tales aloud. Do it right! Eliminate the monotonous memorization of poems, read them with different intonations, in a singsong voice. And try to read fairy tales by roles, let the baby learn to speak loudly, then muffledly, then joyfully, then frightened. This is an excellent training for the vocal apparatus and speech breathing.
