Almost every woman is familiar with this problem — an ugly “orange peel” on the skin, most often formed in the thighs and buttocks. In addition to a purely cosmetic defect, cellulite can also indicate health problems.
The fight against him is a long and demanding task, but still not hopeless. We have prepared a special guide for women, which included the most effective ways to combat cellulite.
The prevalence of cellulite among the fair sex in the world is estimated by experts at 85–98%, depending on the country. This problem knows neither social, nor racial, nor age restrictions. Despite the enormous prevalence of cellulite, over the past 30 years, only a few scientific papers have been published on this condition. Until now, science does not know either the exact causes of the appearance of the “orange peel”, which is formed in the subcutaneous fatty tissue, or one hundred percent methods of getting rid of it. However, a great variety of methods of influence have appeared, so that with the desire and patience it is still possible to achieve smooth skin.
What is cellulite
For the first time the term “cellulite” appeared in France more than a century and a half ago. Since it does not carry any mortal danger to a person, it is not a pathological condition. However, it has become a cosmetic problem for a huge army of women, because, despite all the promoted body positivity, beauty standards dictate that the skin should be smooth and elastic.
Why does he appear
The cause of this condition is not fully known, but there are several theories about this. Considering the fact that this problem concerns, first of all, women, it is suggested that the cause of cellulite is the special architecture of the female skin. Other theories relate to the connection of the “orange peel” with the state of the connective tissue, vascular disorders and inflammatory processes in the body.
Unfortunately, there are no methods that guarantee getting rid of cellulite. once and for all, however, there are many ways to significantly improve the condition of the skin. They can be divided into two blocks. The first relate to the fight against the causes of cellulite from the inside. The second — with its cosmetic manifestations on the outside.
We fight from within
1. Maintain weight
The best way to keep the skin in beauty is a healthy lifestyle. Of course, it includes many components, but the main thing here is maintaining a normal body mass index. Which is impossible without proper nutrition and sports activities. There are a number of products that support skin health, maintain its turgor and prevent cellulite.
2. We nourish the skin properly
“The diet is very seriously reflected in the condition of the skin. Therefore, it is important to ensure that all the necessary components are present in it: the correct (that is, complex) carbohydrates, polyunsaturated fats and proteins that supply collagen to the skin, ”says nutritionist Valeria Yankina.
Complex carbohydrates are rich in cereals, bran, vegetables and fruits. Healthy fats are found in sea fish, avocados, seeds, nuts and vegetable oils.
Protein-rich foods — meat, dairy products, legumes, eggs, fish.
3. Anti-cellulite vitamins
Vitamins saturate the body with antioxidants that prevent the aging process, maintain vascular tone and preserve the appearance of the skin. As Valeria Yankina notes, the most useful vitamins in the fight against cellulite are C, E, A, lycopene, lutein, and rutin. Selenium, zinc and manganese improve blood supply to the skin, due to the slowdown of which cellulite increases, and carnitine and taurine improve metabolism.
4. Eliminate food intolerances
Intolerance to individual foods has become one of the main problems of modern nutrition. Often, it is because of it that not only allergic reactions occur in the body, but also fluid retention, as well as an increase in the volume of fat cells, which together lead to the appearance of cellulite on the skin. The most common causes of food intolerance are foods such as cow’s milk, red meat, citrus fruits, gluten products. However, it is better to take a special enzyme immunoassay to find out which products you should temporarily give up and which ones to use with caution.
5. Drink more
Water is essential to sustain life, and if you don’t get enough H2O, your skin will be the first to be affected. Perhaps this is not directly related to cellulite, but a sufficient amount of clean drinking water (from one and a half liters per day) is an inevitable component of a comprehensive proper nutrition.
6. Stress management
Prolonged chronic stress affects all aspects of life, affects health and appearance. Stress provokes an increased production of the hormone cortisol, especially in the afternoon, which pushes people … to the refrigerator. Because of this, excess weight is often gained. And although there is no direct connection between extra pounds and cellulite, it has been noticed that in women with curvaceous forms, the orange peel effect is more common. Therefore, reducing stress to a minimum is one of the important conditions for maintaining the beauty of the skin.
7. Good sleep
Sleep is one of the most important components of a healthy lifestyle. As Margarita Smirnova, a cardiologist who deals with sleep problems, says, when a person sleeps, the body works hard: “At this time, a number of important biological and chemical processes take place that are impossible during wakefulness. Few people know, but the process of splitting fats occurs not only in sleep, but also exclusively during the deep phase of sleep. Therefore, getting enough sleep is important, among other things, in order to successfully fight cellulite. ”
Fighting outside
8. Wraps
Wraps with the use of various cosmetics are a very common service today. Various mud, chocolate, honey, red pepper, citrus oils are actively used as anti-cellulite therapy.
Wraps are cold and hot. The first are aimed at vasoconstriction and the removal of excess fluid and toxins through the lymphatic system. But with hot wraps, the vessels, on the contrary, expand, and all of the above muck is released through the pores.
Hot wraps are considered more effective, but there are more contraindications to them (be sure to consult a doctor before the procedure). To achieve the effect of smooth skin, at least 10 sessions will be required, depending on the stage of cellulite.
9. Creams and ointments
External means to combat cellulite at home are sold at any pharmacy. Like body wraps, some are based on a warming effect, others are based on a cooling effect. True, doctors cannot say that at least some of the proposed remedies have a serious effect. The maximum that they can do is to slightly increase the turgor of the skin and give it a more well-groomed appearance.
A lot of massage techniques and hardware procedures have been developed against cellulite.
10. Manual anti-cellulite massage
Any beauty salon today offers a manual massage against cellulite. All the actions of the massage therapist are aimed at breaking the orange peel with point strokes of the hands. Such a massage leads to the breakdown of the subcutaneous fat layer. In addition, metabolic processes in the problem area are accelerated. It will take several sessions, but you can hardly expect a long-term effect, especially if you do not follow a healthy lifestyle. Among the disadvantages of the procedure, one can also distinguish its soreness and side effects in the form of bruises on the skin. Contraindications to such massage are thrombophlebitis, varicose veins, fibroids.
11. Vacuum Roller Massage (LPG)
This hardware procedure is carried out in beauty salons or medical centers. Massage under the guidance of a trained specialist is done by a special machine that kneads problem areas with rollers and performs vacuum aspiration. In the process, fat should be burned, and cellulite deposits should melt like snow. Some devices are equipped with an additional function of radiofrequency lifting, that is, they simultaneously tighten the skin. Someone even compares this technique with surgical liposuction. The effect is noticeable after the first sessions, however, as with other massages, it does not last long. And again: ask your doctor about contraindications.
12. Lymphatic drainage massage
This type of massage is aimed at normalizing the lymph flow. Therefore, the body is massaged with a special nozzle strictly in the direction of movement of the lymphatic fluid. As a result, cells are freed from excess fluid, which, among other things, contributes to the formation of cellulite. First, the swelling will go away, and then, you see, the skin will even out. However, this method is considered not very effective — it is recommended to combine it with body wraps and other cosmetic procedures.
13. Pressotherapy
Of the advantages of the procedure — a minimum of contraindications. However, its effect is also, as a rule, minimal (although you will be convinced that this is not the case). Pressotherapy also improves the outflow of lymph, which means it is aimed at eliminating puffiness. However, unlike lymphatic drainage massage, the skin is affected by compressed air, which is supplied to a special suit. Vacuum and pressure alternate, which ensures the removal of lymph stagnation. The course should consist of 10–15 sessions, which will have to take place at intervals of 2–3 days. Some complain of discomfort during the procedure and the appearance of bruises on the skin.
14. Myostimulation
This procedure is called “physical education for the lazy.” I installed the electrodes on the body, turned on the device, which gives them light signals of electric current — and the muscles themselves work. A person at this time feels a slight tingling in the body. It is promised that the muscles as a result of myostimulation will be pumped up as intensively as as a result of exercising in a fitness center. However, in fact, such “lazy gymnastics”, of course, cannot be replaced by such “lazy gymnastics”. In the fight against cellulite, this remedy is also called auxiliary. And, of course, it is not worth counting only with its help to get rid of the orange peel.
15. Laser techniques
Plastic surgeon Dmitry Skvortsov notes that the most effective in surgery in terms of combating cellulite today is the vaser hardware technique: “During the procedure, cellulite cells and fibrous capsules are broken by ultrasound, and the resulting fat emulsion is collected separately (liposuction is performed). Then the prepared fat is cleared of fibrous fibers and injected back under the skin, that is, lipofilling is performed. The lost volume is replenished by fat cells cleared of fibrous capsules, which give a smooth surface. By the way, the effect of this very orange peel is given precisely by fibrous capsules, which are destroyed under the influence of a laser.
… In general, there are a lot of methods, but doctors do not get tired of repeating that a long-term effect in the fight against cellulite can only be achieved by an integrated approach. A healthy lifestyle and modern methods of cosmetology will help you become beautiful, improve metabolism and blood circulation, which will prevent the development of many diseases.
