Con­sti­pa­tion in a child is a prob­lem that many par­ents face. How to properly organize the nutrition of a child with constipation?

As we have said, many chil­dren expe­ri­ence con­sti­pa­tion. In 2018, sci­en­tists from the Russ­ian Med­ical Acad­e­my of Con­tin­u­ing Pro­fes­sion­al Edu­ca­tion pub­lished a paper in which it was found, accord­ing to a soci­o­log­i­cal sur­vey of par­ents and doc­tors, that on aver­age every third child has a delay in bow­el move­ment.

    If the baby suffers from constipation, doctors recommend increasing the amount of fiber consumed, eliminating or limiting as much as possible foods that slow down intestinal motility, provoking fermentation and putrefaction in the intestines.
    When compiling the menu, it is necessary to take into account the age of the child, not to introduce those products that are not allowed according to age recommendations. Nutrition should be balanced, varied, high-calorie enough. The recommended ratio of proteins, fats and carbohydrates is 1:1:3.5.
    The nutrition of the child should be fractional. Everything should be organized so that the baby has three main meals and two more snacks. The optimal break between meals is 2–3 hours.
    It is recommended to include more fresh vegetables and fruits in the menu, limit the consumption of sweets and other junk food as much as possible.
    Another extremely important point is the drinking regimen. The child should drink a sufficient amount of liquid during the day, in addition to water, you can give fruit drinks, juices, compotes.

As we have already said, fresh veg­eta­bles and fruits are extreme­ly use­ful for con­sti­pa­tion in a child. The baby can be giv­en cau­li­flower, zuc­chi­ni, car­rots, egg­plants, but it is bet­ter to lim­it the con­sump­tion of pota­toes. From fruits, you can pay atten­tion to apples, plums, apri­cots and oth­ers.

Also allowed are var­i­ous cere­als cooked in water or milk, espe­cial­ly from buck­wheat, bar­ley, pearl bar­ley and mil­let. Such chil­dren can eat soups in veg­etable or low-fat meat broth, fish and lean meats (prefer­ably chopped, boiled or steamed).

From bak­ery prod­ucts, you should choose whole grain or bran dried bread.

What should be lim­it­ed? These prod­ucts include:

    puff and rich bakery products;
    canned food, sausages, smoked meats;
    meat and fish of fatty varieties;
    rice and semolina;
    legumes and mushrooms, radish, onions;
    various fatty sauces;
    confectionery;
    carbonated drinks.

In the event that con­sti­pa­tion occurs in a child who is breast­feed­ing, all the above rec­om­men­da­tions and restric­tions should be fol­lowed by a nurs­ing moth­er. Such women should not for­get about drink­ing enough, it is nec­es­sary to lim­it the con­sump­tion of sweets and pas­tries, to increase the intake of foods rich in fiber in the body.
