Constipation in a child is a problem that many parents face. This violation can be caused by a large number of reasons, for example, improper introduction of complementary foods, non-compliance with the drinking regimen, insufficient intake of fiber, and so on. How to properly organize the nutrition of a child with constipation?
As we have said, many children experience constipation. In 2018, scientists from the Russian Medical Academy of Continuing Professional Education published a paper in which it was found, according to a sociological survey of parents and doctors, that on average every third child has a delay in bowel movement.
If the baby suffers from constipation, doctors recommend increasing the amount of fiber consumed, eliminating or limiting as much as possible foods that slow down intestinal motility, provoking fermentation and putrefaction in the intestines.
When compiling the menu, it is necessary to take into account the age of the child, not to introduce those products that are not allowed according to age recommendations. Nutrition should be balanced, varied, high-calorie enough. The recommended ratio of proteins, fats and carbohydrates is 1:1:3.5.
The nutrition of the child should be fractional. Everything should be organized so that the baby has three main meals and two more snacks. The optimal break between meals is 2–3 hours.
It is recommended to include more fresh vegetables and fruits in the menu, limit the consumption of sweets and other junk food as much as possible.
Another extremely important point is the drinking regimen. The child should drink a sufficient amount of liquid during the day, in addition to water, you can give fruit drinks, juices, compotes.
What foods can you eat and what should you avoid?
As we have already said, fresh vegetables and fruits are extremely useful for constipation in a child. The baby can be given cauliflower, zucchini, carrots, eggplants, but it is better to limit the consumption of potatoes. From fruits, you can pay attention to apples, plums, apricots and others.
Also allowed are various cereals cooked in water or milk, especially from buckwheat, barley, pearl barley and millet. Such children can eat soups in vegetable or low-fat meat broth, fish and lean meats (preferably chopped, boiled or steamed).
From bakery products, you should choose whole grain or bran dried bread.
What should be limited? These products include:
puff and rich bakery products;
canned food, sausages, smoked meats;
meat and fish of fatty varieties;
rice and semolina;
legumes and mushrooms, radish, onions;
various fatty sauces;
In the event that constipation occurs in a child who is breastfeeding, all the above recommendations and restrictions should be followed by a nursing mother. Such women should not forget about drinking enough, it is necessary to limit the consumption of sweets and pastries, to increase the intake of foods rich in fiber in the body.
