Every day we make a choice: what is better to drink — a cup of coffee or tea? Both drinks are positioned by scientists as beneficial for health, but which will give more benefits?

Scientists are not yet able to answer this question. But there is evidence of what changes will occur in the body if you replace a cup of coffee with tea and follow your choice for the coming days, weeks and months.

1. Your smile will become brighter

A cup of coffee gives energy in the morning and even increases mental performance. But she also has a downside. If you drink coffee often, it stains your teeth.

Doctor of Medical Sciences, Representative Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics in San Francisco Sonya Angelone says that after switching to tea, the teeth will not get dirty so quickly, the smile will become brighter. Especially if you drink light drinks — green and white tea.

2. Heart health can improve

When talking about the benefits of replacing coffee with tea, one cannot miss the point of what kind of coffee we are talking about. After all, when making drip coffee, the cafestol and kahweol compounds are removed, while they remain in the unfiltered drink.

At the same time, studies show that these compounds can increase the level of “bad” cholesterol in the blood, which in turn increases the likelihood of developing cardiovascular diseases. And tea does not contain these compounds, so in this matter it outperforms coffee.

3. “Withdrawal syndrome” may appear

3. “Withdrawal syndrome” may appear

In people who prefer coffee and drink it in large quantities, in response to a reduction in the drink in the diet or its complete abolition, a “withdrawal syndrome” may manifest itself. It causes headaches, increased irritability and nervousness — all these are reactions to cutting down on caffeine.

Once the body gets used to reducing caffeine in the diet, the unpleasant side effects will go away.

Did you know?

Until the middle of the seventeenth century, all tea was green. Everything changed when Chinese producers discovered that they could preserve the quality of the tea leaf through fermentation. A drink made from black tea retained its taste and aroma longer and was ideal for long journeys.

4. You may forget about heartburn

Doctor Sonya Angelone says that coffee contains substances that can cause heartburn in people prone to heartburn, its strongest manifestations. At the same time, both regular coffee and decaffeinated coffee have this effect.

Therefore, avoiding the drink can help you feel better and avoid acid reflux and heartburn.

5. Your dreams will become stronger

When drinking large amounts of coffee, the level of the stress hormone in the body increases. Alcohol abuse also often causes insomnia. Moreover, people sensitive to caffeine can stop sleeping at night due to the fact that they drank 1–2 cups of the drink in the morning!

Classic black tea does not cause such manifestations due to the lower caffeine content, and herbal teas can even serve as a “sleeping potion”. Sweet dreams evoke teas from linden, peppermint, chamomile, lemon balm.

6. There will be no sudden drop in energy

6. There will be no sudden drop in energy

People who drink more than three or four cups of coffee daily can over-stimulate their bodies. This is because caffeine is a powerful stimulant.

Because of this, during the day the body can experience either a high energy charge, which ends quickly, or a breakdown that follows it. Such “swings” have a bad effect on general well-being, undermine self-confidence. Therefore, replacing coffee with a cup of tea, which is not a strong stimulant, can significantly improve life.

On a note!

Have you ever wondered how many cups of tea are drunk daily in the world? It turns out that scientists have already calculated everything — an average of 3.7 billion cups.

7. Stop worrying about muscle spasms

In people who cannot imagine life without coffee and do not limit themselves to “on duty” 1–2 cups a day, excess caffeine can flush out important minerals from the body, primarily magnesium and calcium. Although some experts point out that you can prevent these risks by adding 2 tbsp. spoons of milk, not all people listen to advice.

But the lack of magnesium and calcium can cause cramps, increased strength after exercise, bone loss. In women with painful periods, a cup of coffee can make the pain worse. Therefore, it is important not to part with coffee and at least replace it with tea from time to time.

8. Mood can get worse

2018 study published in the journal Nutrients, showed that people who drink 4 cups of coffee a day have a lower risk of developing depression compared to those who do not. If coffee is replaced with tea, most likely this advantage will go away.

While scientists don’t yet know what coffee’s antidepressant effect is, one thing is clear: quitting coffee can affect your mood. “Even if caffeine is responsible for the effect, not drinking coffee could mean that a person would need to drink twice as much tea to achieve the same benefits,” Dr. Sonya Angelone.

9. You will still be protected from cancer

But in terms of the benefits of coffee in protecting against cancer, switching to tea will not change anything. Because studies confirm that tea also has anti-carcinogenic properties. Experts say it National Cancer Institute, based on data from 66 studies.

However, one 2019 study published in International Journal of Cancer, shows that it is very important to control the temperature when drinking a drink. It turns out that drinking hot tea increases the risk of esophageal cancer. However, some experts believe that all hot drinks have this “side effect”.

Did you know?

Iced tea was invented by accident. At the 1904 World’s Fair in St. Louis, a tea merchant prepared many cups of hot tea. But it was so hot outside that the guests didn’t even want to look in the direction of the drink. Then the seller added ice cubes to the tea. And then a huge queue lined up for tea — everyone wanted to appreciate the new drink and at the same time — to cool off.

10. You will be less dehydrated.

10. You will be less dehydrated.

It is no secret that coffee has a strong diuretic effect. Therefore, its abuse can cause dehydration in the body. In the East, when ordering a cup of coffee in a restaurant, waiters always serve a glass of water with it — in order to “neutralize” this effect.

But in ordinary life, few people drink enough water after drinking coffee. Therefore, reducing it in the diet in favor of quality tea can help prevent the risks of dehydration.

11. You can lose weight

Surely you have heard that some types of coffee contribute to weight loss. Such “magical” properties, for example, are attributed to unroasted coffee. But how things really are, we told in the article “Will Green Coffee Help You Lose Weight: Scientific Facts”.

But the benefits of tea for weight loss have been proven. In one small 8‑week study, people who consumed 4 cups of green tea a day showed faster weight loss. Scientists explain the effect obtained by the content of powerful antioxidants EGCG in the drink.

An important difference between this study and similar scientific works is that the participants in the experiment did not change their lifestyle — nutrition and fitness loads, but were engaged in their usual activities.
