Sleep snoring is a sound syndrome that appears due to the vibration of the tissues of the pharynx against the background of the passage of air through the respiratory tract. Such an unpleasant phenomenon can be observed both in a child and in an adult. What are the causes of snoring? How to get rid of the sound syndrome? Which doctor can you turn to for help, so as not to waste time and effort in vain?

To get answers to all these questions and protect yourself from negative consequences, it is important not to self-medicate and contact a qualified medical specialist (ENT or therapist) in time. Taking into account the results of the examination and the data of the anamnesis, a competent doctor will make a diagnosis and prescribe a complex effective therapy. The patient may be advised to consult with another medical professional, including a dentist or pulmonologist.

Causes of snoring

Causes of snoring

Snoring is a specific sound that a person makes during sleep due to partially obstructed breathing. The phenomenon, as a rule, intensifies after the transition from superficial to deeper sleep. The muscles of the tongue, soft palate, and throat relax, blocking the airways. Thus, the air flow increases, the vibration becomes more frequent and, as a result, loud snoring sounds.

There can be several reasons for snoring. Allocate physiological and external factors. Physiological reasons include:

    individual features of the anatomy of the throat and nose;
    curvature of the nasal septum;
    chronic nasal congestion;
    excess weight, especially if there are fat deposits in the abdomen and neck;
    diseases of the lungs or bronchi, diabetes mellitus, hypothyroidism;
    enlarged adenoids;
    the presence of polyps in the nose;
    elongated uvula and soft palate;
    malocclusion.

External factors are:

    addictions, including drinking before bed;
    taking medications that calm or help fight insomnia
    posture during sleep.

In adolescents and children, the cause of snoring may be the accumulation of mucus in the nasal passages, and doctors often diagnose adenoids and inflammation of the tonsils.

How to get rid of snoring?

The snoring sound phenomenon is a social problem. People who snore most often do not notice it. Anyone can develop the syndrome. As the body ages, the incidence of snoring increases.

If you do not know how to get rid of snoring, and want to exclude breathing disorders during sleep from your life, then you cannot do without the help of a doctor. Don’t let the problem run its course. After all, constant snoring in a dream can indicate health problems, including signs of obstructive sleep apnea (a severe sleep disorder in which there are long pauses in breathing). This is one of the main reasons for the collapse.

In the treatment of snoring, a reliable assessment of the severity of the patient’s condition is initially carried out. To diagnose the problem, the doctor may refer you for an additional examination using the following methods:

    polysomnography (electrophysiological method);
    endoscopic examination of the upper respiratory tract;
    rhinomanometry (assessment of the patency of the nasal passages);
    computed tomography (CT) of the paranasal sinuses.

Treat snoring depending on the causes of its occurrence.

    If snoring in a dream arose against the background of nasal congestion, including due to a cold, then, most likely, immediately after complete recovery, it will no longer develop at night.
    To reduce the accumulation of mucus in the nasal passages, it is necessary to maintain optimal temperature conditions in the room where the patient sleeps — moist and cool. You can wash the nasal passages with saline solutions and special drops that the ENT or therapist will prescribe. It is important to know that, for example, with an allergic rhinitis, which appears due to dust mites, you can reduce the risk of snoring during sleep with the help of hypoallergenic bed linen. Such textiles prevent the spread of allergens and their penetration into the body of a sick person.
    If snoring is combined with the habit of sleeping with an open mouth, then a special bandage may be recommended that fixes the lower jaw. Tires that support a soft palate are also common. This medical design contributes to the unhindered penetration of air into the respiratory tract and its exit to the outside during sleep.
    In the treatment of snoring, all anomalies in the structure of the nasopharynx and nose, which can resist air, are eliminated. Special facial masks and devices for the oral cavity are used. Individually selected devices are used during sleep. They eliminate defects and normalize breathing.
    Orthodontic treatment of snoring with malocclusion is not excluded.
    Often, doctors prescribe laser plastic surgery of the soft palate or CPAP treatment (artificial “inflating” of the airways).

Today there are more than 250 registered methods designed to get rid of snoring. Such a large number of ways and the inexhaustible number of people suffering from snoring, once again underline the prevalence of the problem and its relevance.

Healthy lifestyle and sleep snoring

Healthy lifestyle and sleep snoring

When snoring during sleep occurs rarely, but prevents you from resting, you should use useful tips:

    Try not to sleep on your back, use comfortable pillows.
    Don’t drink alcoholic beverages right before bed. They relax the muscles of the pharynx, which leads to blocking the access of air.
    Watch your own weight. If you are overweight, try to lose at least a few extra pounds. By reducing body weight even by 5–7%, you can already count on improved breathing.

Do not self-medicate and do not purchase dubious devices in the form of pillows, breathing apparatus or masks. Only a doctor, based on the results of the patient’s diagnosis, will be able to choose an effective therapy. Seek help from your GP or visit an ENT office right away. Any experiments are fraught with negative consequences. Lead a healthy lifestyle and listen to the signals of your own body.
