Snoring is a low-frequency sound phenomenon that often accompanies a person’s breathing during daytime or nighttime sleep. According to statistics, such an unpleasant symptom most often appears after 30–40 years and may be the result of age-related changes in the body. Men, due to various circumstances, are more prone to snoring, because they are less likely to monitor their health, more often smoke and drink alcoholic beverages.

Most men have absolutely no control over the state of their body, and in the presence of snoring in a dream, they are in no hurry to seek help from an otolaryngologist or therapist, considering the sound phenomenon to be a harmless feature of the body. But, unfortunately, not many people know that snoring during sleep is an alarming symptom of respiratory disorders, which can be a sign of sleep apnea (short-term pauses in breathing during sleep that can lead to irreparable consequences in the form of oxygen deficiency). Due to constant snoring in a dream, you may experience:

    drowsiness during wakefulness;
    constant fatigue;
    memory deterioration.

Snoring in men can occur at any age. The sound symptom is often manifested in those who sleep with their mouths open, have anatomical defects in the mouth and nose, or have a malocclusion. Only a doctor can accurately determine the causes of snoring, even if they seem obvious.

Symptoms and causes of snoring in men

Symptoms and causes of snoring in men

Snoring in a man can occur due to weakening of the muscles of the tongue, soft palate and pharynx. It is the tissues of these parts of the oral cavity that partially or completely block the airways. At the same time, the air flow increases, creating vibration and provoking the occurrence of snoring in a dream. Weakened muscles can be the result of: ENT diseases, endocrine disruptions, neuromuscular diseases and anomalies in the structure of the skull.

Due to difficulty breathing, oxygen starvation can occur, which negatively affects the entire body, including the central nervous system.

Physiological causes of snoring include:

    excess weight;
    age-related changes in the body;
    formations in the throat or nose (polyps, cysts);
    nasal congestion;
    inflammation of the palatine tonsils;
    curvature of the nasal septum;
    elongated soft tongue, etc.

Obesity is one of the main causes of snoring. Breathing disorders during sleep in overweight people are observed almost 5 times more often than in those whose weight is normal. The thing is that fat in the cervical and chest area presses on the airways, narrowing them.

External factors can also provoke snoring, in particular, the wrong posture, taking sleeping pills or alcohol intoxication.

The sound symptom accompanying the breathing of a sleeping person should in any case be alarming. If snoring in a man or woman is accompanied by short pauses in breathing, then you should seek the advice of a doctor as soon as possible.

Features of the treatment of snoring

Snoring is treated with medical methods, depending on the causes of the symptom. Apply drug therapy, all kinds of auxiliary devices and surgery. Snoring treatment will depend on the age of the patient and the presence of chronic diseases, including diseases of the cardiovascular, respiratory, endocrine and nervous systems.

If a man snores on the background of an allergy, then the problem will disappear immediately after a full recovery. The same applies to a runny nose with a cold, as well as inflammation of the palatine tonsils.

Surgical intervention may be recommended for anatomical deformities that can be traced in the oral cavity or nose. Also, the operation is indicated for polyps and cysts, when the formation blocks the airways and makes breathing difficult. Most often, surgery is performed using laser or radiofrequency radiation. Such operations allow to reduce the volume of tissues in the soft palate, which leads to a decrease in their mobility during breathing.

Eliminate the causes of snoring and with the help of intraoral devices. The patient can be assigned special silicone caps that are put on the lower and upper dentition. This manipulation allows you to increase the space of the pharynx, which facilitates breathing during sleep. Silicone applicators, similar to baby nipples, are also common, designed to irritate the muscles of the tongue and pharynx, which reduces tissue vibration and, accordingly, reduces snoring.

Most of the intraoral devices are freely available, but you cannot choose and buy them yourself even in a pharmacy. Only a competent doctor will be able to choose the right device and provide safe snoring treatment at home.

You should not buy products that eliminate snoring from dubious sellers. Pillows, masks, pills, plasters, clips and “magic” sprays most often do not give any positive effect. Non-medical preparations without consulting a doctor can harm health by provoking the appearance of additional pathologies, such as allergies or poisoning.

How to prevent snoring in your sleep?

How to prevent snoring in your sleep?

Prevention of snoring is especially effective in cases where the sound symptom that accompanies the breathing of a sleeping person rarely appears. There are several helpful tips:

boats, boating, men
acupuncture, spa, massage
ai generated, men, karate
    Do not take sleeping pills or sedatives without a doctor’s prescription. If the medicines are prescribed by a medical specialist, then in no case exceed the recommended doses. Be sure to report your snoring to your doctor.
    Watch your body weight. Try to eat right and do not load the stomach before bed.
    Do not drink alcoholic beverages.
    As you fall asleep, take a comfortable position. Try to sleep on your side. This position of the body will help to avoid falling tongue.
    With a runny nose, keep the nasopharynx clean.
    Do not forget about the temperature in the bedroom and air humidity.

If snoring occurs frequently, then you should definitely report the problem to your doctor. Make an appointment with a general practitioner or an otolaryngologist.
