How to wash a camel blanket — this question periodically arises for anyone who uses such bedding. After all, despite the fact that camel hair is very hygroscopic, has unique properties, does not cake and is well maintained, it also needs careful care, especially with daily use.

The gift of the “ships of the desert”: what is good about camel hair?

Animal hair has been used to create clothing and household items long before the advent of the textile industry. Technology continued to improve even as chemists managed to obtain and mass-produce alternative synthetic fillers. The main reason why we still have not abandoned woolen clothes is their unique properties that have a beneficial effect on our health.

In a rather extensive list of natural materials, camel hair occupies a special place. Unlike sheep and goat, its fibers have an optimal structure that allows you to maintain the most comfortable body temperature, maintains the volume of the product and provides ideal breathability. And the high content of lanolin has a positive effect on the skin. It is worth noting that the prices for camel blankets are quite high, since the wool used by these pack animals consists of two-thirds of soft fluff and only one-third of outer hair. The mass after processing and combing does not accumulate static electricity at all, which means that it practically does not attract dust. However, caring for a camel wool blanket requires certain skills and knowledge. It’s pretty easy to mess up this product.

Features of using natural wool products

Along with camel wool, sheep, goat, and yak wool are actively used to create bedding. All of them have different characteristics, but the operating rules are the same for any of them:

In order for the camel blanket to be washed as rarely as possible, and the product itself to remain clean and fresh longer, it is necessary to use it only in a duvet cover or a special cover. Thus, the need for “water procedures” can be minimized.
In hot and sunny weather, it is recommended to ventilate not only blankets, but also pillows in the fresh air, this will increase the service life and allow you to get rid of unpleasant odors.
Shake wool products as often as possible, this will increase their volume and help maintain their original shape.
If you use seasonal products, then at the end of the season, do not forget to carefully put them away, preferably in a cotton or vacuum bag. Make sure that moths do not get inside, use natural insect repellers — sachets with tansy, lavender, wormwood.

How to wash a camel blanket by hand?

It doesn’t matter what caused you to want to put your bedding in order on your own — a desire to save money, distrust of modern methods of cleaning woolen products, banal modesty. If you want to know how to wash a camel blanket, here are some tips:

Any washing for this kind of thing is an aggressive method. Quilted products with wool filler should not be actively wrinkled, twisted, shaken off when wet, as under the influence of water the fibers become more vulnerable and tear faster. There are voids in the case.

If washing does not require the entire surface, but only a small part of it, try to reduce the stain without resorting to complete soaking of the product. For this, it is best to use gel-like profile products. How to wash a camel blanket at home? Follow our advice:

Fill the bath with warm water, the temperature of which is not higher than 30ºС.
Thoroughly dissolve a small amount of liquid or gel detergent in water.
Refuse to use powders, since it is unlikely that you will be able to rinse the blanket properly, given the ban on any intense exposure.
Soak the product for two to three hours, periodically gently turning over. Drain the powder water and let the blanket run down the open tub drain.
Pour clean water of the same temperature, carefully turn the blanket over several times. We let it drain.
The pressing is very gentle. Let excess moisture remain in the blanket.
Dry the product only on a horizontal surface. Away from heaters and heating systems. The room must be well ventilated.

Dry cleaning a camel wool blanket is even easier. For it, you will need a special product based on lanolin, which is enough just to beat until a stable foam. The foam is applied to the blanket and after some time is completely removed from the surface with a clean, dry cloth.

Can duvets be washed in a washing machine?

In fact, washing blankets in the machine is not a very good idea. The result may be unpredictable. However, for lack of a better one, many dare to take this step. The main thing is to act very carefully.

How to wash a camel blanket in the washing machine without ruining it?

For starters, don’t pre-soak your duvet and don’t risk trying to wash it in an activator-type machine. Its intensity and the inability to choose a washing mode will only damage the product.
When washing wool bedding in a washing machine, select the “Delicate wash” or “Wool” mode. The water temperature should not exceed 30ºС.
Use only liquid powders or special gels for washing wool.
Do not wring the product in the machine! Even a gentle spin will deform the canvas and unravel the filler. It is better to carefully drain the water and let the blanket drain on its own without removing it from the drum. Unfortunately, you can use this option only if you have a top-loading machine.
Do not use any additional conditioning agents, fixatives or fragrances. A weak solution of vinegar will help to cope with an unpleasant smell.
Rinse mode can be used once. Is there detergent left on the duvet? It is better to rinse the product again by hand.

Safe Alternative

Professional dry cleaning can be a safe alternative to wool laundering. You don’t have to use this method often, once a year is enough to keep your blankets the same as when you bought them. Professionals working in this field know exactly how to care for a camel blanket, how to clean it and how to put the cover and filler in order.

In addition, it is unlikely that it will be possible to wash blankets designed for a double bed in a typewriter, too overall products. Do not worry about the fact that aggressive preparations are used during dry cleaning. Most of them are absolutely harmless and completely removed from the surface.

But you can be sure that your blanket will retain its original shape and characteristics, but it will hardly be possible to restore the product after an unsuccessful wash.

Do not try to adjust the shape with hot water, shrinking, the wool will simply become unusable and lose all its exceptional qualities. You should not try to restore the blanket with the help of punching. This method does not always work even on down and feather products, and even more so on wool fibers. Inside the camel blanket, the fibers and down are stacked in such a way that they form a single layer. When you try to “shake” it, it can break up into components and get lost in the corners of the product.
