With such an unpleasant phenomenon as snoring, it was possible to meet, perhaps, everyone. It causes a lot of inconvenience: it tires, irritates, but most importantly, snoring can be life-threatening.
Why does a person snore?
Snoring can be observed in men, women, and even children. From a physiological point of view, at the moment when a person snores, the muscles of the soft palate relax and the tongue retracts. Its beating during breathing causes a characteristic sound. Snoring, which does not pose a threat to life, often interferes with those around you, preventing you from getting enough sleep and enjoying sleep.
There are various reasons that can affect the occurrence of snoring: a deviated septum, a large palatine uvula (uvula), adenoids (more common in children), enlarged tonsils that close together, etc. Concomitant factors may be obesity, heart — vascular diseases, metabolic disorders in the body, etc.
Statistics show that among the people who die each year from heart attacks and strokes, there are three times more snorers than non-snorers. At the same time, patients with severe snoring are many times more likely to get into traffic accidents than people who do not snore.
Hazardous to health is called snoring, in which breathing stops during sleep, or the so-called apnea attacks. On average, the duration of breathing pauses during sleep in snoring patients is thirty to forty seconds, and their number can reach four hundred per night. If you multiply these values, you get about four to five hours of no breathing during a full eight hours of sleep. This is a fairly high risk of heart attack and sudden death. When a snorer suddenly stops breathing in his sleep for more than thirty seconds, he must be awakened urgently, as a life-threatening condition arises.
If a person lives alone, without relatives, it is sometimes possible to determine the presence of snoring by indirect signs. So, people suffering from snoring toss and turn a lot in their sleep, fluffing up sheets and blankets under them. The number of visits to the toilet at night also increases, and there is frequent urination. Often, after waking up, snoring people show sweat on their faces, there is a rise in morning pressure, as well as fatigue, weakness, and drowsiness during the day. The person feels unrested during the night. These symptoms may indicate life-threatening snoring. If they are, you should consult a doctor.
Italian scientists have proven that with a long course of chronic hypoxia, destructive (destructive) processes begin in the cerebral cortex, which over time can reduce a person’s intelligence.
Often, large, obese people who are obese are prone to snoring. Doctors call this phenomenon short neck syndrome. In overweight people, the tongue often sinks during sleep, which leads to the production of characteristic guttural sounds and the appearance of sleep apnea. In the presence of overweight and snoring, you need to lose at least a little weight. According to statistics, a ten to twenty percent weight loss can reduce snoring by up to fifty percent.
Normally, when a person falls asleep, he enters the so-called kingdom of the vagus, his respiratory rate and pulse rate decrease. At the same time, in snoring people, when falling asleep, on the contrary, blood pressure rises, the brain is awake, and the work of many systems, including cardiovascular and respiratory systems, is disrupted. They do not have sufficient secretion of substances and hormones necessary for sleep. At the same time, in addition to the lack of rest of the body, overweight people can gain even more weight during sleep.
If sleep apnea attacks occur constantly, as well as the frequency and duration of breath holding during sleep, you need to consult a somnologist. Based on the research, the doctor will make the correct diagnosis and prescribe the appropriate treatment.
But, unfortunately, not all polyclinics have somnologists. In this case, you can seek help from a cardiologist, neuropathologist, endocrinologist. These specialists can send the data obtained after the examination to the somnologists at the Center for Sleep Medicine for research and the appointment of a suitable treatment.
By the way, in some European countries they do not issue the right to drive heavy vehicles if a person suffers from sleep apnea. Each driver of this category must have a medical certificate confirming the absence of an illness.
If the appearance of snoring is caused by anatomical features, for example, a deviated nasal septum, you need to seek help from an otolaryngologist. In this case, as a rule, an operation is prescribed. After surgery, the problem goes away by itself.
When snoring occurs due to overgrown polyps, they are removed. And if there is a large palatine uvula (uvula), the doctor may prescribe its cutting or uvuloplasty, for example.
Often, with the beginning of the heating season, the air in the house dries up and many people snore (safe) during sleep. Prevention of snoring in this case consists in regular ventilation of the premises, as well as humidification of the air in the home.
Sleeping with snoring is recommended with a slightly raised head. Pillow and mattress must be properly matched. You can use special preventive drugs, for example, sprays in the nose, in the throat. Such remedies come in different compositions and can reduce snoring in some cases. But everything is purely individual.
By the way, according to the US Patent Office, about two hundred devices designed to prevent and combat snoring have been registered, which also indicates the persistence of the problem of snoring and its high relevance today.
The following set of exercises is aimed at preventing snoring, as well as its prevention. They help to train the corresponding muscles and keep them in good shape. When performing them, you need to strain as many muscles of the face, neck, etc. as possible. It is advisable to perform the exercises daily three to four times a day, twenty-five to thirty times.
First exercise. Make intense movements, simulating (without water) rinsing your teeth, while straining your muscles. Then tilt your head back and imitate gargling, pronouncing the sound “a” lingeringly.
Second exercise. Stretch the tip of the tongue to the chin, keeping the muscles in tension. In this case, it is not necessary to stick out the entire tongue completely, only the tip is possible. The most important thing is to strain as many muscles as possible.
Third exercise. Press the fist on the chin, trying to push the lower jaw back. At the same time, create resistance with the muscles, pushing the fist back, straining the cheeks, tongue, neck, etc. throughout the entire exercise.
Fourth exercise. Hold the pencil between your lips and teeth. Press on it with your lips, upper, lower jaw for three to five seconds, tensing your muscles, then loosen. Such an exercise, in addition to treating snoring, is also an excellent prevention of the appearance of a second chin.
